Page 1 of 2 Find out the basic site structure and navigational tips, user access, and origins of this website.Navigational comments While there are many features to this
website, the majority of the contents are in the form of articles,
under a number of topics. You can click "Articles" on the left column
to see the list of topics. Within each topic is a list of article
titles. You can also choose to look at a long list of the most
recent 100 articles by clicking on Home, or use Search for particular
keywords. Explore around and you will find many hidden cabinets in this
website. Become Registered User I have kept various
patentable ideas from the public, allowing access to those friends who
requests (via Contact Us on the left) to be a registered user. I
disabled automatic registration, so user accounts are granted manually
by me, so as to have control over who can access sensitive materials.
Regular users may benefit from various tips and tricks on using this
site. (See details on the next page.) So the Tips module is
enabled for registered users.
Mambo 4.5.1 has the feature of indicating the access level of the
articles (Public, Registered, Special). Since the words are too
long, I implemented the system by adding R and S after the title of the
articles.
Origin of Tech-Spirits I prefer to think many times, and
execute once. This applies to the process of creating my personal
website, as a way to document my thoughts, and to interact with others
online. I wanted to create a site to allow myself, family and
friends to use the web as a tool to collect our thoughts. Recent
advances in blogging, forum, and content management tools such as
WordPress, PHPBB2, ... culmulating in the Fantastico package makes
things ever so easy. Searching for Fantastico led to BGFWEB, which
offers a really low price hosting for me to play with all these tools.
When deciding the site, the URL name needs to capture all the important
aspects of me, so I search for available domain names (at whois.sc)
with the following sets of words that represents my various background,
interest, and intent: - math, physics, technology, tech, science
- mental thinking, mind, brain, soul, spirit, idea, thought
- Chinese heritage
- variations: plurals, connect words with no space, or with dashes.
Among the available combinations, I choose: - Tech:
captures my background in math, physics, science, technology, gadgetry,
computer science, web, ingenious hacks, ... even my high school
Brooklyn Tech.
- Spirit: captures the essence of our
humanity: connotating a passionate living person rather than mere
mental activity. Brain is purely biological/physical. Mind distinguish
human from animal. Soul is more metaphysical. But Spirit really
captures the inner self, especially within my Christian faith,
affirming our eternal existence and really what we meant by the word
Heart, as "look/listen into your heart" in popular media.
- The Chinese translation,
精灵,JingLing, has the connotation of a brilliant insightful smart
flexible elusive adaptive adorable person. So implicitly my Chinese
heritage is displayed through the choice of the word Spirit.
- s.com: plural in spirits denote my interest in forming a community of similar spirits. .Com stands for community.
- "-" (dash) : My standard in design: clarity and readability is crucial, so all my websites will have dashes between words.
