With a valid WLS library card, we can now access many audiobooks from NetLibrary. I have already listened to a number of interesting titles.
If you don't know already, Westchester Library System allows library card holders to connect to NetLibrary.com to freely listen to 1600 audiobooks, and among the 20 subjects is a "Christian Audiobooks". Although mostly fiction, you will find interesting titles like "The Language of God" by Francis Collins that has been recommended to some of us.
The start page is http://www.westchesterlibraries.org/special/newsitem1.html
You can always use your computer to listen to these titles. You can even transfer them to a few Portable Devices (such as the Creative series), but you will not be able to use iPod due to the lack of Digital Rights Management.
Titles I have listened to (in no particular order): Somehow my previous entry on this vanished, so I have to retype this. I will write individual reviews elsewhere.
The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief Recorded Books Unabridged; Unabridged. by Collins, Francis S.
A physical chemist turned molecular biologist, then director of Human Genome project, he is a wonderful teacher who understands the essence of the hard sciences, and the crucial scientific issues with origin of life and evolution. His Christian faith and tutorial style explanation of some critical insights of CS Lewis offers a great example of a scientist who integrates knowledge and faith. Furthermore, I learned his area of expertise, and a tour of the DNA sequencing task. Finally, his personal integration of faith and science is compeling.
Political Theory : The Classic Texts and Their Continuing Relevance (eAudiobook) Modern Scholar by Kaplan, Joshua. Though a cursory tour of historical writings, it was worth the reminder.
My thoughts on Internet Political Systems:
- oligopoly and dictatorship of search engines
- democracy of web 2.0
- Locke's liberty for website collaboration and creative attempts,
- capitalism as an adaptive process
Marx fail to see that money is a tool, not the ends. Hence capitalism can optimize whatever the society deemed good. There will always be ways to divide people into groups. Does that make them well defined classes?
Are there class struggles on the web? There are always the established and the new comer attempting to make it. Calling it class struggle is preposterous.
50 Spiritual Classics : Timeless Wisdom From 50 Great Books of Inner Discovery, Enlightenment, & Purpose (eAudiobook) Your Coach in a Box; Unabridged. by Butler-Bowdon, Tom
Incidentally, notes on these 50-Classic series are available at www.butler-bowdon.com. Summaries on a separate post.
The Undercover Economist : Exposing Why the Rich Are Rich, the Poor Are Poor--and Why You Can Never Buy a Decent Used Car! (eAudiobook) Recorded Books Development; Unabridged. by Harford, Tim
This is a must read along all the other popular economic books I have posted. Focusing the foundation on the demand and supply issue, this work explores various economic topics in a different order of presentation than others that I have read, and complement them extremely well.
Fundamental Cases : The Twentieth-century Courtroom Battles That Changed Our Nation (eAudiobook) Modern Scholar by Dershowitz, Alan M. When I attended his guest lectures to Stephen J Gould's class at Harvard, he was more a showman. In this work I am impressed by his scholarly discussion, and learned to appreciate the legal profession, as well as the US system of justice.
Faith and Reason : The Philosophy of Religion (eAudiobook) Modern Scholar | | by Kreeft, Peter | This is a brilliant intellectual summary of all the issues surrounding a seeker's questions against faith, and a believer's answers for faith. All lectures in the style of "The top 20 reasons for/against ..." is wonderfully presented. Having the issues abstracted to the bare minimum, one begins to understand issues like the problem of "God and existence of evil" more readily, since normally other books on these issues tend to inflate the discussion so much by the myriad of examples and flowery language that can shade away the basic logical structure of the arguments.
The Entrepreneur Starter Kit : Expert Insights Into Small Business Success! (eAudiobook) Your Coach in a Box | | by Christian, Lyn | Focusing mainly on the Coaching/Mentoring profession, these "Talk-show" style lessens can be generalized to normal businesses. A drag at first, the pace picks up on the 3rd lesson.
Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart : Thirty True Things You Need to Know How (eAudiobook) Recorded Books Development; Unabridged. by Livingston, Gordon. The author, given up on faith after personal tragedy, discuss the realistic view of life and offer many practical wisdom. Like a good listening to a grandfather's lesson on life.
Reminiscences of a Stock Operator (eAudiobook) Unabridged. | | by Lefevre, Edwin. | This is the amazing classic that I bought multiple paperback, hardcover, eBook, etc. Glad to see it on Audiobook!
